How does a dynamic QR code work?

Some explanation…

With a standard QR code the link is coded into the QR code and cannot be changed. Dynamic QR codes work differently. You first go towards the redirecting page. In this case our own website: QRcode.me with some data at the end of the URL.

Our website saves some data (the scan, when, etc.)

Then you will be redirected to the URL which the person who created the QR code has saved.

In the example on the right the person scanning first goes to our site and then to bbc.com. Of course you can create every QR code design you want like on the homepage of our website.

Scan a dynamic QR code

Scan this QR code. This QR code links to the BBC website and you will directly be redirected to there.

Compare this with a static QR Code

Scan the static QR code below. This QR code directly links to BBC. You’ll see the link appear directly in your phone. This QR code is thus not measured and the link cannot be changed.

Is it really free?

Yes it remains free forever! How? What’s your business model?

We ask donations for the static QR code. Why? These are created more than 200.000 times a month! Want to avoid the queue? For $19.99 you can avoid the queue, download in PDF, save your lay-out, and you get access to the bulk generator!

The dynamic QR codes are also free, and don’t expire. This is unique in the market. Take a look at other generators (qrcode.studio) etc. and they charge from $5 up to $40 euros a month!

What’s the catch?

The free variant of the dynamic QR code shows our logo after scanning for 2 seconds. After this short, 2 second break, you’ll be sent to the destination page. A sort of advertisement for our website. Want to remove our logo? This is possible with a one-time donation:

 One-time [qrcode_single_price] (incl VAT)

Donate for one QR code, and the logo will be gone forever. No subscriptions, nothing. Simple right?

Try it: The free variant.

-> You’ll see our logo on screen for 2 seconds.

I want to create way more than 10 QR codes without logo.

This is very simple:

In your account, click on bundle dynamic QR code under payment options.

Then select your bundle. You can use them directly after payment. You can download your invoice by clicking on ‘download invoice’ below payment options.

One-time purchase for 20 QR Codes: [qrcode_20bundle_price_inc] (inc. VAT)

One-time purchase for 100 QR Codes: [qrcode_100bundle_price_inc] (inc. VAT)

What is the maximum number of scans?

The number of scans of dynamic QR codes is based on a fair use policy. I.e. with regular use, you won’t scan the QR code every 2 seconds…

That means that there is no trouble with having 10.000 scans a day. If the number of scans is higher, we will contact you first. Hopefully you understand that not everything can be expected from one-time $7.99!

To be clear: 99,99% of our customers have less than 200 scans a day!

How do I delete the QRcode.me logo?

Delete the logo that appears after scanning by navigating to the QR code in your account. Select the button ‘QR logo’.

Then follow the instructions.

You can directly pay through Paypal or Creditcard. After payment the QR code will be updated directly, so you won’t see our logo anymore!

Why don’t I see my own URL when scanning the QR code?

A dynamic QR code doesn’t show the link on screen where you are sent to. Instead it shows the ‘redirecting’ page which redirects you to the destination page. The person scanning doesn’t notice anything except that the destination page is not visible at first.

All known, paid QR generators work like this. In fact, it looks like you’re creating a static QR code, but this is not actually true. At QRcode.me we make this as clear as possible!

With static QR codes the destination page is coded into the QR code itself. It is quite easy to recognize whether you have static or dynamic QR code!

Which URL appears on screen at QRcode.me?

Choose which Scan URL you want to use in the generator. FreeQRCode owns these domains:

The scan URL is the link visible on the screen after you’ve scanned a QR code. Why do I see this link instead of my own URL? Read more here.

QRcode.me has developed something truly unique, where:

  1. You can choose which scan URL you want for your QR code;
  2. You can customize this URL for more recognition.
Screenshot of https://qrcode.me/qrdynamic/. There are 2 blue arrows in the screen. The first one is pointing to the 4 possible scan URL options, and the second arrow is pointing to the customize bar.

How do I do this?

Choose which scan URL you want to choose in the QR code generator. QRcode.me owns the following domains:

Customize

You can choose to customize your scan url further. If you don’t do this you’ll see – for example  – qrcode.ly. But, you can also add the so called subdomain.

E.g.: Your destination page is tesco.com. As Scan URL, you can then choose: tesco.qrcode.ly or tesco.qrscan.me

The phone shows this link after scanning. There are some criteria to the customization of the URL:

  • Only use numbers, characters, and/or a hyphen;
  • Don’t use www;
  • Use up to 64 characters;
  • TIP: preferably use less than the amount of characters mentioned below.

qrcode.ly: 6
qrlink.me: 6
qr.do: 10

Why? If you’re scanning with an Iphone or Ipad camera, it will only show the amount of characters mentioned above. Because qr.do is so short, it allows up to 10 characters.

Are you using more characters, don’t worry. The Iphone will only show the chosen domain. It will still work.

Some people use specific scan apps (this is not a good choice) or use Android phones. These often do show the complete link.

Do your QR codes expire?

The most asked question! It also frustrates us if our customers use other QR platforms. The QR codes created there are often unexpectedly dynamic, and suddenly you as customer are forced to pay for a subscription, or you QR code expires. We can do better. So do your QR codes expire?

Answer: No.

If you create a QR code at our generator it wil never expire. It will work forever. This is true for both static and dynamic QR codes.

1 exception to clean up the system. If your dynamic QR code is not scanned (free version) for more than 3 months it will be archived. You will receive a warning email before it will be archived.
