Text QR codes explained

A text QR code shows a piece of plain text when scanned. Useful in the right setting — but with one important limitation to know first.

Good to know before you print

Most built-in phone cameras do not display a plain-text QR code. Camera apps are designed to act on links, contacts and Wi-Fi — they often ignore raw text. Your reader may need a dedicated QR-scanner app to see it.

When a text QR code makes sense

  • Internal use where you control which scanner app is used
  • Short reference codes, serial numbers or notes
  • Audiences you know will use a QR-reader app, not just the camera

A more reliable alternative

If the public needs to read your message with any phone, use a dynamic QR code that opens a small web page or link instead. Every camera handles links, your text is shown reliably, and you can edit it afterwards. Learn about dynamic QR codes.
